Single Vehicle Accident - Northwood

On 1/12/19 at approximately 5:00 a.m. a vehicle was seen coming over the viaduct on 8th Street N in Northwood traveling south at a high rate of speed. A Worth County Deputy pulled out behind to pursue when the Deputy witnessed the vehicle run through the four-way stop light at Central Ave and 8th St, where the vehicle still moving at high rate of speed subsequently struck a power line pole and a tree. The driver, identified as Ruei Gatkuoth of Albert Lea, MN was transported to the hospital by ambulance.

The Worth County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on the scene by, Northwood Fire Co., Mason City Ambulance, and the Iowa State Patrol.

The accident is still under investigation.

Northwood Fire

The male subject that perished in the house fire on 1/26/2022 at 20114th St. south Northwood, Iowa was 54-year-old Douglas Alan Braun of Northwood. The other occupant of the house and the deputy who were taken to Mercy One of North Iowa for possible smoke inhalation were treated and released that same day. No foul play is suspected but the case is still under investigation by the Northwood Fire, Worth County Sheriff’s Office, State Fire Marshal and the State Medical Examiner’s office.

House Fire

On 1/26/2022 at 0338 hours the Worth County Sheriff’s Office responded to a house fire at 201 14th St S in Northwood. A Worth County Deputy arrived onscene and was able to evacuate one resident from the home. The house became fully engulfed with flames. A second Worth County Deputy arrived on-scene and efforts were made to evacuate a second resident from the home, but were unsuccessful due to the extent of the fire. The Northwood Fire Department arrived on-scene, took command, and began efforts to extinguish the fire. The first resident and the first Deputy on-scene were transported to Mercy One Hospital in Mason City for smoke inhalation. The second resident was later pronounced dead at the scene. The Worth County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Northwood Fire, Kensett Fire, Mason City Fire, Worth County Emergency Management, and Alliant Energy. The State Fire Marshal was contacted. The case in under investigation at this time.
