Covid-19 Update 04/13/2021

Information on the immediate pause of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine. We at Worth County Public Health have not administered any Johnson and Johnson vaccine but we know that some county residents may have received it elsewhere so here is some information for you. If you have any questions please feel free to give us a call and we would be happy to answer any that you may have.
As of April 12, more than 6.8 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson (Janssen ) vaccine have been administered in the U.S. CDC and FDA are reviewing data involving six reported U.S. cases of a rare and severe type of blood clot in individuals after receiving the J&J vaccine. In these cases, a type of blood clot called cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) was seen in combination with low levels of blood platelets (thrombocytopenia). All six cases occurred among women between the ages of 18 and 48, and symptoms occurred 6 to 13 days after vaccination. Treatment of this specific type of blood clot is different from the treatment that might typically be administered. Usually, an anticoagulant drug called heparin is used to treat blood clots. In this setting, administration of heparin may be dangerous, and alternative treatments need to be given.
CDC will convene a meeting of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) on Wednesday to further review these cases and assess their potential significance. FDA will review that analysis as it also investigates these cases. Until that process is complete, we are recommending a pause in the use of this vaccine out of an abundance of caution. This is important, in part, to ensure that the health care provider community is aware of the potential for these adverse events and can plan for proper recognition and management due to the unique treatment required with this type of blood clot.
Right now, these adverse events appear to be extremely rare. COVID-19 vaccine safety is a top priority for the federal government, and we take all reports of health problems following COVID-19 vaccination very seriously. People who have received the J&J vaccine who develop severe headache, abdominal pain, leg pain, or shortness of breath within three weeks after vaccination should contact their health care provider. Health care providers are asked to report adverse events to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System at https://vaers.hhs.gov/reportevent.html.
CDC and FDA will provide additional information and answer questions later today at a media briefing. A recording of that media call will be available on the FDA’s YouTube channel.

Covid-19 Vaccine Update - 1/21
Released today: Iowa is expanding Phase 1B to include Iowans age 65 and older.
Thank you for your patience and again you are always welcome to call our office with questions.
Vaccine Distribution to Priority Populations - Phase I
Iowa is currently vaccinating individuals in Phase 1A, that includes health care providers and long term care residents.
Phase 1B begins February 1, 2021. However, vaccine remains in short supply. This means not everyone in Phase 1B will be able to get vaccinated right away. To help balance vaccine supply with the Phase 1B demands, IDPH has implemented a tiered prioritization, outlined below. IDPH remains in close contact with our federal partners to communicate Iowa’s need for additional vaccines.
Phase 1B Priority Populations:
Persons aged 65 years and over. OR, the following populations vulnerable to high risk of exposure or severity of illness (listed in order of priority):
Tier 1
First Responders
PK-12 staff, early childhood education, childcare workers
Tier 2
Frontline essential workers in food, agriculture, and manufacturing sectors who live or work in non-social distanced settings
Individuals with disabilities living in home settings and their direct care staff
Tier 3
Staff and individuals living in congregate settings not covered by previous Phase or Tier
Government officials, including staff, engaged in business at the State Capitol
Tier 4
Inspectors responsible for health, life and safety
Tier 5
Correctional facility staff and individuals incarcerated
IDPH continues to urge Iowans that while the vaccine is still a scarce resource, to practice virus mitigation efforts.

Covid-19 Vaccine Update- 1/19
We continue Covid vaccine administration to those only in group 1a at this time.
We thank you for your patience while waiting for group 1b populations to roll out. Listed below is the IDAC priority populations that will be eligible for group 1b. As always, we will update as soon as we are able to move forward and you are welcome to call our office at 641-324-1741.
Phase 1b priority populations
Due to the current and short-term projections for vaccine allocation for Iowa, IDAC recommends the following, more
narrowly defined, eligible populations for Phase 1b:
Persons aged > 75years, OR the following populations vulnerable to high risk of exposure or severity of illness:
? Individuals with disabilities living in home settings whom are dependent on attendant care staff, and their
attendant care staff, if not otherwise vaccinated under Phase 1a.
? Correctional facility staff and individuals incarcerated, including state and city or county operated facilities.
? Staff of and individuals living in congregate settings, not covered by the first two bullets, including shelters,
sober living homes, behavioral health treatment centers, and detention centers. College dormitories shall
not be included as part of Phase 1B.
? Where public health data indicates outbreaks or clusters of disease among food, agriculture, distribution
and manufacturing workers whom work in or live in congregate settings that do not allow for social
distancing. For example, working in a meatpacking or manufacturing production line or migrant workers
whom live in bunkroom style housing.
? PK-12 school staff, early childhood education, and childcare workers. Sub-prioritization should consider
persons who work with younger and at-risk children in care, to better ensure child-wellbeing and mitigate
impact to parent workforce.
? First responders (e.g., firefighters, police officers, and dependent adult abuse and child welfare social
workers).
? Inspectors responsible for health, life and safety, including those in hospital and long-term care settings,
child, and food production safety.
? Government officials, including staff, to ensure continuity of government, engaged in state business at the
Iowa Capitol during the legislative session

Covid-19 Vaccine Update-1/13
We are still vaccinating group 1A which is healthcare, emergency personnel and nursing homes. We are not able to move onto group 1B yet. We will continue to keep you updated as soon as we know. Attached is a link from Iowa Department of Public Health published today with some information on who will be included in group 1B and other information related to group 1B.
COVID-19 VACCINE UPDATE
Thank you for your patience as we work through this vaccination process! As directed by Iowa Dept. of Public Health and the Infectious Disease Advisory Council, all Iowa counties, including Worth, are only vaccinating individuals who fall within group 1A, which is healthcare, emergency personnel and nursing homes. The vaccine we have is limited and reserved for those in group 1A at this time. We are diligently working to get our vaccine to all of these people in this group. We are not able to use any of this first vaccine allotment for any other groups at this point. IDPH and the Infectious Disease Advisory Council determines vaccine allocation and when counties are able to move to the next group and we have not received our supply yet for the next group. According to the state it could potentially be several weeks before the next group opens up. The state wants to stabilize the healthcare system in Iowa by vaccinating those in group 1A first. CDC has information as far as who will be eligible for the vaccine in the next group, https://www.cdc.gov/.../201.../vaccines/recommendations.html, once we receive the state's information on who specifically is in the next group for Iowa residents, we will get that information to you through Facebook, newspaper, etc. Once it is your turn you will come to us to receive your vaccine. When the time comes we will let you know where the location will be as it depends on the demand and amount of vaccine we receive but we have locations secured and we will let you know where to go. We will also update this information as we receive it to Facebook, newspaper, etc. You are also welcome to call our office regularly to see if the next group has opened, our number is 641-324-1741.
